 Abstract:

“Personality” was a dominating termin Western psychology in the sixties and seventies. It replaced the term “character”, and is now more or less replaced by the term “self”. Yet its roots go far beyond the twentieth century, and they can be traced back to the early use of the term “psychology”. However, the early use of the term went in many different directions, but historians do agree upon the fact that it appeared primarily among protestant scholastics in the late sixteenth century. This was not a coincidence as the Christian Reformation represented an emphasis on the sacrament of penance, which implied a renewed strength on self-examination and personal confessions for the true believer. As Max Weber demonstrated, this new emphasis led to a certain type of morality based on the duty to be faithful to one’s deed. Michel Foucault demonstrated in the first volume of the History of Sexuality how the same sacrament of penance led to a certain interest in the human nature and human sexuality. The interest in human nature was at the core of the very early use of psychology in the 16th and 17th century. Thus in this presentation focus is on the aspects that characterized early psychology, specifically individuality and subjectivity, which can be regarded as precursors for personality psychology of today.
